Ashfield woman donates £170,000 of house sale proceeds to charities
A remarkable Kirkby woman has donated thousands of pounds to charities – two years after her death.
Gladys Mason was 97 when she died in September 2024 and the process began of selling her bungalow.

Now, two years later, the sale has been completed and Glady’s wishes of donating the proceeds to her chosen charities have now been carried out by her friend and neighbour and chief executor of her will, Brian Edwards.
Generous Gladys has donated £40,000 to John Eastwood Hospice in Sutton, £40,000 to the PDSA, £10,000 to the British Heart Foundation, £25,000 to Cancer Research UK, £25,000 to the RSPCA, £15,000 to the RSPB and £15,000 to the Royal British Legion.
Brian said: “I helped her make her will as she was on her own and had no living relatives.
"She asked me to come round one day and sit with her and help her set all this up.
"So I sorted out the sale of the bungalow and it’s taken nearly two years to get eveything done and completed but the home has new owners now and all the donations have been able to be made.
"She was a lovely lady, loved her garden, the animals and birds, which is why she left money to charities like the RSPCA and the RSPB.
"When her daughter was alive, she had a little dog and Gladys thought the world of it but they had some problems with it and the PDSA were really helpful and supportive which is why she left them money.
"Her daughter and her husband both passed away with cancer and the John Eastwood Hospice looked after them both and she was very gratful to them, so she wanted to leave money for them, and also Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation as well, linked in with that.
“Her husband Walter was in the war and so the British Legion was another good cause she also wanted to give to.
"She was just a very nice lady who wanted to give back to people who had helped her and her family down the years.”
