Bassetlaw League round-up: Hosiery Mills one point off top spot after beating Worksop

Mills beat mid-table Worksop while Papplewick spilled vital points after being held to a winning draw at third-placed Anston

With eight games to go it remains neck and neck with the sides due to face each other at Papplewick on 8th August in what could go a long way to deciding the title.

Mills roared to their seventh win as they made 272 with top scores from Kamal Manek (53) and a century from Tom New, scoring 123.

This gave Mills a very defendable score with Kieron Garside producing a fantastic bowling spell of 7-40 to see off Worksop for 196 and a 76-run victory.

Papplewick, also looking for their seventh win of the campaign, were invited to bat first by Anston, and ultimately capitalised on this opportunity, as they accrued a score of 323-8.

Justin Braithwaite and Shaharyar Aslam opened the innings with 123 runs between them to set the platform for the lower order batsman to play with freedom as Gareth Blinkhorn made 98 and Charlie Blatherwick 35.

The total was always out of Anston’s reach. But they did manage to achieve full batting points as their total was 233-7 with the reliable Amila Perera scoring an unbeaten 75 alongside 54 from Callum Smith as Anston took nine points while Papplewick & Linby took 17.

Fifth-placed Clipstone entertained Thoresby Colliery in a game in which over 400 runs were scored with 17 wickets falling and Clipstone coming out on top by three wickets.

Thoresby batted first, scoring 201 for the loss of seven wickets with the runs coming from the bats of Ben Marson, with 74, and Azar Hussai,n with an unbeaten 56.

That ensured full batting points were gained and three bowling points were received for Clipstone as Lee Wilson led the bowling with 3-54.

In reply Clipstone won by three wickets with the tidy bowling of Jack Dickens and Tebogo Mokwena taking 3-25, and 3-57 respectively. Tim Ward scored 41 to get Clipstone over the line.

Bottom-placed Kiveton Park were this week at home to seventh-placed Glapwell and made hay, scoring 227 for the loss of eight wickets with overseas player Ari Karvelas scoring 43, Tom Haslam achieving 51 and Rob Coxon a more than useful 58.

In reply Glapwell never looked like getting to the 228 target set as they lost by 33 runs.

Runs were made by Danny Bircumshaw, with 34, and Rob Davison, with 38. Lee Topham and Jonathan Cushing took seven wickets in tandem to kill any chances of Glapwell stopping Kiveton gaining a much-needed third win of the summer.

North Wheatley with Leverton continued their fine form taking 19 points in a six wicket win over struggling Notts & Arnold Amateur with their fourth win and second away win this season.

North Wheatley put Notts & Arnold Amateurs in and a total of 255 for 7 was accumulated by the young hosts with 44 from Yohance McKenzie, 56 from Liam Patterson-White, and 32 from Ben Scott. Their innings was restricted by the bowling of Jake Tong with 3-91.

In reply North Wheatley with Leverton made the 256 runs required for the win with relative ease as only four wickets were taken by Notts & Arnold Amateur.

This was built around both Loates brothers, Jonny and Mathew, amassing 113 runs between them, reaching 42 unbeaten and 71 respectively.

Luke Tong complemented his brother’s bowling by scoring 48, as North Wheatley with Leverton won by six wickets heaping more pressure on 10th placed Notts & Arnold Amateurs.

The club directly below Notts & Arnold, Edwinstowe were in the match of the day at Retford.

A tied result, there were over 400 runs scored with 17 wickets falling and 27 points taken.

That worked out as 13 points to Retford and 14 to Edwinstowe, ensuring that Edwinstowe leapfrogged Notts & Arnold into 10th.

Edwinstowe’s innings was centred around the batting of James Dobson and Paul Benson, who scored over 100 runs between them, with Dobson making 74 and Benson making an unbeaten 45. Nevertheless, Retford’s bowing, led by Nathan Singleton, restricted Edwinstowe as they made full batting points with a total of 215.

In reply Retford struggled with only Chandra Kumara making over 20.

His score of 120 was his first century of the season. Only five players made double figures for Retford, yet this was enough for Retford as they tied the game and subsequently shared the 12 available result points.
