Former Leicestershire captain Nigel Briers to speak at Bassetlaw Umpires winter meeting

The Bassetlaw Umpires Association will hold their first Winter meeting at the Cuckney Cricket Centre on Saturday, 7th November 2026.

The guest speaker will be the former Leicestershire captain Nigel Briers, who turned the team into a very strong unit following a disappointing time after taking on the role from David Gower.

Briers made his mark when he became the youngest player to make his debut for the county, at just 16 years of age. In 1990, he became captain and went on to lead the side to the final of the Gillette Cup three years later. In the same year, he was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year.

Briers led what became a very strong side for the next three years, he then stood down from the captaincy at the end of the 1995 season. He had intended to carry on as opening batsman but was forced to withdraw from first class cricket completely after suffering a knee injury, becoming a regular spectator instead.

The team he had built went on to win the County Championship in 1996 and 1998 under the guidance of James Whitaker.

Briers’ highest score was an unbeaten 201 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, whilst his bowling best was 4 for 29 against Derbyshire at Leicester. He scored 31 first class centuries and passed the half century mark on 95 occasions. He later became cricket coach at Marlborough College and later at St. Paul's School, Barnes.

The event takes place at 2.30pm with no admission charge, and everyone is invited to come along and enjoy Nigel Briers speak.
