The Stags manager has decided to try new things to take the club forward next season and decided that Moore, in his second spell with the club, would not be a part of that.

“It was horrible,” he admitted. “It was very emotional, but I have got to do what’s best for the club, the team and myself moving forward.

“I felt we need a fresh start with some fresh energy. Micky has been superb for me personally, not just for the football club in his two stints.

“I just felt that the time was right now to inject something new. I’ve got a couple of ideas in my head that I feel will move the club forward, and that’s what I am going to go with.

“These are obviously decisions you live and die by. But with five weeks and seven games left I felt the time was right for me to have a look at a few bits and bobs and see if those bits and bobs work, assess over the summer and go again.

“It’s football. It’s life It’s one of those things. I will stay in touch with Micky – I am close to him. But we move on.

“It wouldn’t have been fair to just let his contract run out in the summer. Micky got ‘pooed on’ last time he went from a great height and I wasn’t going to do that to him.

“So we had a chat and he said if that’s the case I understand it but I need to know now. It gives him time to look at other things and me the remaining games to try a few things out.

“It was fair for Micky and his family and, I have a lot of respect for him.”

Murray’s handling of the club is attracting praise from all quarters.

“We were called the ‘Mecca’ by the PFA the other day due to the young coaches we’ve got in and the coaching we are doing, the first team, and the academy, and the energy and drive we’ve got,” he said.

“The FA are thinking very highly of us at the minute which is great to have and I feel it’s now time to make the next step.”

Murray today had young coach Scott Rickards from his youth/academy set-up on the bench at Hartlepool United today.

Murray said; “The youth team are top of the league and flying and Scott has been a massive part of that. So I wanted him to taste the first team environment today.”
