"The way we played tonight was exactly the way I want us to look,”said Paterson. “Sometimes it is hard to get that every week, but that is what we will be asking. Now the test is keeping everyone fit and hungry and ready to replicate that.

"The way we started the game I thought we were the better team. It is a results based business and we know that.

"It is a good night for the lads and they should enjoy it, but there is another game on Saturday. I am pleased with the players and proud of them. It was a really great club day and I thought we looked like the aggresive unit that I want us to be.

"I didn’t think the sending off affected the result, we were well deserving of our victory. I am pleaased with the footbal club and for the club, the fans and players.

"The most important thing is to get everybody fresh and to keep trying to get better.”

Kanu put County in front from the penalty spot after drawing a foul in the area, with Lipsiuc coming off the bench in the second half to wrap up the points in front of the Kop late on.

The Owls had been reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute when Jamal Lowe was shown a straight red card for a lunge on Jacob Bedeau.

But the Magpies were already well in control and could have finished the night with a far healthier scoreline have created a number of good chances before and after Lowe's dismissal.
