Boozer test-drove new car and crashed into wall and parked car in Mansfield

A young man who had a few drinks and decided to test-drive his new car was nearly twice over the legal limit when he crashed into a wall and a parked car in Mansfield.

Erik Ostas, 22, of Broomhill Lane, Mansfield, admitted driving while over the drink drive limit and without a valid licence or insurance, when he appeared before Mansfield magistrates on Wednesday.

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said: “A member of the public saw Mr Ostas driving without headlights and flashed him to try to inform him, but he didn’t appear to take notice.

“Shortly afterwards the same motorist saw him saw him hit a wall and a parked car.”

Police stopped his Citroen Picasso on Arundel Drive at 3.30am, on June 24. A breath test revealed he had 66 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Melanie Hoffman, mitigating, said: “He purchased a car that he intended to apply for a licence, get insurance and learn how to drive.

“Unfortunately he a few drinks and made the foolish decision to test drive his car. It was a spur of the moment decision which he deeply regrets.”

Magistrates banned him from driving for 17 months. He was fined £250 for drink driving and £150 for driving without any insurance. He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £30.
